Clean print heads: "/usr/libexec/cups/filter/rastertoprinter failed"

I use cups with my EpsonStylus C61 printer connected by USB.  Printing works fine.

If I try to clean the print heads through the cups web interface (using the "Clean Print Heads" button) I get the above message and nothing happens. The logs don't seem to produce any obvious errors.

I'm using gentoo and cups-1.2.9.

The file "rastertoprinter" exists and has read/execute permissions.
