[cups.general] Problem: check device; will retry in 30 seconds

Hallo,

Sometimes my print jobs just hang with the above mentioned status.
I have not been able to been able to find a pattern in this behaviour.
What might cause this?

The printer is an HP LaserJet 1300 on the parallel port.
I'm using cups 1.2.11 and hplip 1.7.4 at the moment, but the problem
also occurred with older versions.
The ppd file is HP-LaserJet_1300-hpijs.ppd.
My system is based on SLackware 11.0 and I'm using kernel 2.6.18.9.
