getting CUPS to work for Canon ip1500 printer

I have a Canon Pixma ip1500 color printer and can't get the thing to work in Ubuntu.   I have more Windows experience than Ubuntu, but am eager to try to get it to work. I have tried different drivers for the different printers Canon lists, but none seem to work.  Would a generic driver work?  I don't really know what I am doing but trying to learn. Is there somewhere I can look where I can find out more about printers on Ubuntu?  There doesn't seem to be a ppd on my Canon disk....
