[cups.general] printer just prints blank pages

I have CUPS on gentoo with a HP printer connected through hplip.

I had this setup working with CUPS 1.1.23 and hplip 1.6.10.

Then I upgraded to CUPS 1.2.10 and hplip 1.7.4.  Now I get blank pages.  I 
don't know where to start debugging cups.  I ran strace on the hpiod and it 
does not seem to receive enough data to send to the printer so I believe the 
trouble is further upstream.

What are some things I can do to find the problem?
