Setting up CUPS / password in '/etc/shadow'

Hello,

I've got a question on 'how to install and update CUPS'. We've got Scientific Linux (based on RedHat) here working with CUPS 1.2.4 installed. The problem is, we need a self compiled version. After installation ('make istall'), I configured cupsd.conf to authenticte against allowed users ('AuthType Basic'). If I test the authentication, I get an an error like 'user "xyz" has no password in shadow file' (but user has password in '/etc/shadow'). The original CUPS which was pre-installed works fine in that case.
So, the question is how to update CUPS correctly or how to resolve this problem?

Thanks in advance, Thomas
