How to setup a local printer ?

I edited /etc/cups/printers.conf to

DeviceURI usb

but now I get
StateMessage /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb failed

Why does usb fails?

I'm using linux from the scratch 2.6.23.1; /dev/usb/lp0 works very well if I use gs to translate a ps file

gs -sDEVICE=hl1240 -sOutputFile=here file.ps
cat here > /dev/usb/lp0

so this is definitely a CUPS configuration problem.

P.S. could somebody redesign the forums? It's extremely tedious to use.
