"gs" is the command to invoke Ghostscript. Ghostscript is necessary for
all printers where you find a "foomatic-rip" in the "*cupsFilter:" line
of the PPD, or where "pstoraster" is used (basically most non-PostScript
printers) -- these are marked by a "rasterto<something>" filter in the
"*cupsFilter" line.

If you do have PostScript printers only, you won't need Ghostscript/gs.
