That's funny. You must be the first person to think of CUPS as being "primitive".

Given that you expected it to be more complex or sophisticated, I assume that your own, self-written backend is fully aware of all the primitive requirements for plugging it into the CUPS filtering chain such as the keeping the order of "$0 $1 $2 $3 $4 $5 [$6]". (If your complex mind does not understand this hint, you should maybe read up on {at least the synopsis of} "man filter" and "man backend"....)

Someone who has proofed to me that his software is easily extensible with *MY* own self-written backends, if only I adapt myself to some of the "primitive" rules the CUPS framework sets for me.

You should not blame the CUPS creators for your own self-written backend failing if you are not even willing to give the details of your unsuccessful attempts: like, which version of CUPS?, which OS or Linux distro?
