really bizarre problem printing non-default page size

I'm losing my mind over this one.

I'm trying to move print services from one server to another. The setup is virtually the same, identical config files, identical drivers. The clients are Wndows systems using the Cups v.6 drivers on PS capable printers.

The problem is that the print job always comes out on the default page size (on all printers, even when printing to the virtual cups-pdf printer) no matter what page size the client requests. So a job that should print on Legal doesn't (if I make the default Legal then it does, but then a job that should print Letter comes out on Legal). The problem is repeatable using IPP (http:) printing (eliminating Samba) from the Windows clients as well. But same driver connecting to the previous server (either via Samba or IPP) works just fine. Also printing the testprint.ps page from the server via CLI and "media=" option works fine as well (on either server). Same drivers, identical CUPS versions, yet one works, one doesn't.

Any clues?
