another USB printer , can't print

I figured it out!
Having the parallel printer stop working, provided a clue, with the resulting google searches, to the problem with both printers.

modprobe parport_pc didn't work because all printer functions were compiled into the kernel, as built-ins.

Once I changed them to modules, both parallel and usb printers became visible to the backend.
