You should tell a little bit more about your CUPS configuration -
which version, the printer type, tue printer's PPD, etc, etc.

I did a couple of home gronw backends during the recent years,
ranging vom CUPS 1.1.7 to 1.3.5, and never had weird problems like
yours.
