printers.conf changing

Recently removed a Digi terminal server from a red Hat system and took the printers that were on the Digi and configured them as straight network printers. Every once in a while, the printers stop working and the reason is that printers.conf somehow gets the old device names back in. I login remotely, use lpadmin to set the correct IP again and all is well until the next time. Where could CUPS be getting the old port info from and how can I stop this behavior?
