401 Unauthorized

Through the web interface we are having problems adding a new printer.
I'm accessing the web interface from a PC over the network.  I added the IP of the workstation into the cupsd.conf.    Once I try to add the printer I get a prompt asking for credentials.  I've tried the root user name and password that doesn't work.

401 Unauthorized

Enter your username and password or the root username and password to access this page. If you are using Kerberos authentication, make sure you have a valid Kerberos ticket.
