foomatic fails

Hello!
Can anybody please help with the following problem:

I am trying to install an epson EPL5800L printer on my recently installed kubuntu 8.04. I have followed the instructions in
  http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/Database/CUPSDocumentation

but when I try to print a test page I get the message

epson "/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed"

I got the .ppd file by downloading
epsoneplijs-0.4.0.tgz from  http://sourceforge.net/

Please note that I had managed to configure the same printer on the same desktop with the same .ppd file under kubuntu 6.06.
