See Kurt Pfeifle's CUPS trobleshooting HOWTO, it especially tells you 
how to activate the debug mode of CUPS and how to find the origin of the 
problem then.

In most cases it is not Foomatic itself, often this happens when 
Ghostscript crashes on bad Postscript, driver executables or libraries 
are not installed, fonts are missing, ...

Are you sure that you have installed the full package and not only the 
PPD file?

You need to switch to debug mode. Then Foomatic adds a lot of 
information here, which usually shows what went wrong.
