hello all,

I've tried adding my hpdeskjet990cxi USB printer, but I have no success with either versions 1.3.9 or 1.4.b1

1. with version 1.3.9, /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb gives me:
"
direct usb://HP/DESKJET%20990C?serial=HU24G1S0SKLG "HP DESKJET 990C" "HP DESKJET 990C USB #1" "MFG:HEWLETT-PACKARD;MDL:DESKJET 990C;CMD:MLC,PCL,PML;CLS:PRINTER;DES:Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 990C;SN:HU24G1S0SKLG;S:00808080800010002C110005FC208005D;P:0800,FL,B0;J: ;W
"

but with version 1.4.b1 this command only gives
"
DEBUG: list_devices
DEBUG: usb_find_busses=4
DEBUG: usb_find_devices=7
"

lsusb gives among others:
"
Bus 004 Device 003: ID 03f0:3304 Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 990c
"

2. In neither versions, I can add the printer as a USB printer, the drop down combo list just doesn't give an USB entry

I have tried adding it as a IPP printer, which at first seems to succeed, but trying a test print gives the error message:

"
/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed
"

3. my main questions are:
3a. where should I be looking for the cause of the USB printer not being recognized by CUPS?
3b. if everything else fails, is there a command line alternative? I mean, the USB printer seems to be recognized by the system, just not by cups. Can I give some lp command, referring to a PPD file perhaps, in order to print something different from an ASCII file?

greetings, Danny.
