Problems with CUPS under Ubuntu

I've just upgraded the OS on my server from Mandrake to Ubuntu.
I have an HP1220C printer attached via USB to the server, and I
had CUPS working fine on the old system. Since I changed to
Ubuntu I can't get CUPS working reliably. Since my server has
no display attached I use the web interface to add the printer.
I've had numerous occasions when the server fails to respond.
I get part way through add printer and it just hangs. Trying to
go back to the start often results in a 404 (not found) error
for which the only cure seems to be restarting cupsys on the
server.

I finally got a printer up and seemingly working, using the
HP1220C-hpijs drive, which is what I had been using on the old
system. However, when I set up a second queue to the printer and
tried to change the options to use A3 paper, it wouldn't accept it.
Has the hpijs driver been downgraded? It used to handle A3 OK.

Eventually, after much messing about, deleting queues and re-adding
them, with lots of server restarts in between, I managed to get
a queue that would take A3 using the Gutenprint driver. However,
a first test suggests that this is printing offset.

Finally, I tried to set up an A5 queue, but that gives mysterious
error message in the control panel saying:
/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster failed
but not much else. Is anyone able to help me sort this out?

Many thanks

Bill
