CX7400 grayscale problem

Sorry to reply to my own posting, but I was able to find the answer after some more forays.  I'll document it here for Google to more easily pick up ;-)

The problem was in gutenprint.  Specifically, gutenprint versions prior to 5.2.0-beta4 had a bug for several Epson Stylus printers similar to the CX7400, whereby when you printed in low resolution (720x360 or lower) the grayscale was messed up (as seen in http://home.comcast.net/~mbanksusc/scanimg.png ).

Printing at higher resolutions works, and printing at the problematic low resolutions works using gutenprint 5.2.0.

Sorry to bother this list with something that didn't turn out to be a CUPS problem!
