HP Universal Print Drivers

Any ideas on how to deal with HP Universal Print Drivers? They want to communicate with the printer to determine its make/model before printing. From what I hear, manufacturers are moving towards these "universal" drivers, exclusively.

Case-in-point, the HP LaserJet P4014 only offers the PCL6 version as a "native" driver. PCL5 and PS are only available as a universal driver.

Can CUPS be configured to pass this information along to satisfy the driver?
