how to determine what the printer error is

I have an openbsd 4.5 box.  I have a hp psc 1510 printer.  the hardware worked under ubuntu.  The printer is a usb printer and if I access the port directly I get some printing.  the queue is hp.  the cups is v 1.2.7.  the printer is stopped accepting jobs, published.  I can start printer.  then it is idle, accepting jobs, published.  I restart a print job and the printer goes back to stopped.  in printer.conf, there is an error mode that is at stopped.  in cups.conf, the log debug is on.  I look at the error log through port 631 and there seems to be nothing both relevant and intelligeable.  I assume there is an error and the printer is stopping.  How do I figure out the error so I have a chance to correct it
