What I'd do is put a help page up (you probably have a web site for
this kind of stuff already) for "power printing users" that describes
how to configure direct IPP printing.  By default users will still do
the "point and print" stuff which goes through Samba, but if anyone
complains you can point them at the help page for how to speed things
up...

There are also probably some print driver options (disable background
and metafile printing, for example) that may speed things up slightly.
Again, you can document this on that help page.

Also, if you are using ActiveDirectory at all you can push the IPP
printer definitions out through AD and the students will be able to
use those printers automagically.
