What you are looking for is the "Number Up" option.  From the command-
line use:

     lp -d printer -o number-up=2 filename

 From the print dialog, choose the Layout pane to see the Number Up
option.  If you don't see the panes below the printer and settings
choosers, click on the blue disclosure triangle to expand the dialog.
