duplex not working from command line with hp4250

I asked several days ago about problems with getting my hp laserjet 4250 to print duplex from the commandline.
I have now tried it with both the hpijs 2.8.2 driver and the postscript driver that came with cups and the postscript driver that came with the printer
If I have the default option set to duplex off It will not print duplex from the command line with the -o sides=two-sided-long-edge. However if I am printing an open office document and want to print duplex I can choose the option and it prints.
I currently deal with this by printing -o raw and using files with HP's PCL code I can embed the duplex command in the file, but I am trying to change to using postscript where I no longer use a raw que and theoretically should be able to print duplex from the command line.
Any ideas on how to get this work?
It seems crazy that Open Office will work but the command line will not.
Here is what it shows for lpoptions

$ lpoptions -d hp4250 -l
