mysterious jobs

In desperation, I'm resending a query that I sent originally last month but which elicited no response. I set up a new printer (Dell 2330dn) under CUPS 1.3.8 running under Debian linux. I used the PPD file that came on the accompanying CD from Dell. The problem I'm having is that every minute or so a print-job is sent to the new printer which results in the printing of a page with these lines at the top:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
POST / HTTP/1.1
Content-Length: 263
Content-Type: application/ipp
Host: xxx.xxx.xxx.xx %%% (the printer's IP address)
User-Agent: CUPS/1.3.8
Expect: 100-Continue

----------------------------------------------------------------------

followed by a single line of characters which are mostly unreadable and which spill off the end of the physical line in a manner reminiscent of the stair-case effect. These are hard to read (because many characters are over-printed) but I think that they are mostly responses to requests for printer-attributes. It seems that the pages being printed reflect a record of exchanges between the cups daemon and the printer, but none of us can figure out why these records are being printed or how to stop the printing.

This seems to be the same problem that is reported in the thread that
begins here:

  http://www.mail-archive.com/mhvlug@mhvlug.org/msg01007.html

but which sadly seems to end without resolution. I contacted the original poster in that thread and was told that they simpled blocked all communication between the CUPS server and the printer to stop the printing.

I would be extraordinarily grateful for any help at all that anyone might be able to offer in resolving this problem.

Thank you for all of your work,

Jim
