[cups.general] Cannot print to PDF

Using the CUPS web interface, I configured a PDF printer on Ubuntu 9.10:

▼ Queue Name ▼	Description	Location	Make and Model	Status
PDF	Virtual PDF Printer		Generic CUPS-PDF Printer	Idle


However, when I try to print to it I get an error that the printer
does not exist:
karmic1 at kubuntu:~$ lpr -PPDF /tmp/todo-weekly.pdf
lpr: PDF: unknown printer
karmic1 at kubuntu:~$ lpr -P PDF /tmp/todo-weekly.pdf
lpr: PDF: unknown printer
karmic1 at kubuntu:~$

Why would that be? Thanks in advance.
