The "d" files are the original job files for printing.

No.  Data from stdin has been generated by another filter in front of  
you.  This is described in the CUPS Design Description:

The application sends print data to the scheduler (cupsd), which  
stores is in the "d" file. It then runs one or more filters to send  
the data to the printer.
