Back-channel communications will not work with protocols like IPP; http is just another URI scheme that can be used for IPP...

Side-channel support is limited - some printers will support the necessary bits for getting the 1284 device ID and status bits, and you can drain output (no-op) and check for bidirectional support (always returns "no").
