imagetops output bad -- cascaded

Followup to my prior post with more examples:
Apparently there is a printer option "Amount of extension" which was set to 2 in the prior examples, and had a range of 0-3.  Here it is at 2:

Input: <http://www.sonic.net/~qm/cups/imagetops/bug3/input.png>
Arguments: <http://www.sonic.net/~qm/cups/imagetops/bug3/args>
Output: <http://www.sonic.net/~qm/cups/imagetops/bug3/output.ps>
 (converted output <http://www.sonic.net/~qm/cups/imagetops/bug3/output.ps.png>)

I then set it to 0:

Input: <http://www.sonic.net/~qm/cups/imagetops/bug4/input4.png>
Arguments: <http://www.sonic.net/~qm/cups/imagetops/bug4/args4>
Output: <http://www.sonic.net/~qm/cups/imagetops/bug4/output4.ps>

What the heck?
