Dear Helge

Thanks for your reply.

I did find the PPD file that I was looking for.

I tried making a new printer in the cups interface and specified the exact
location of the PPD file (/usr/share/ppd/openprinting/HP/HP-LaserJet_4.ppd)

Cups seems to reject the attempt to specify my own selection of the ppd file

Cups seems to ignore my specification and subs in its own.

I wonder what I need to do to force cups to use my selection.
