Right, 

I remember installing an acrobat PPD and using a FILE::// URI to print to a script...
It was ugly but it was a start....

Thanks for the cupsfilter info...  I'll dig into it.

As far as I know CUPS before version 1.3 never provided
a 'Print to PDF' device or such a functionality.

Such kind of functionality was provided by third party tools
("third party" from the CUPS point of view), usually by
whatever desktop system like KDE and/or Gnome.

Since CUPS 1.3 there is the cupsfilter command which should
generate a PDF file the same way as if it would be printed, see
