Nope, CUPS supports parallel, USB, SCSI, and serial printers out of the box (for direct connect, anyways).

More than likely something isn't configured properly for the parallel port - either in the BIOS or in your kernel.

On Linux the "dmesg" command will give you the kernel log, which might show something related to the parallel port.  You might also try:

    echo "Hello, World!" >/dev/lp0

to see if that produces any text on your Epson.
