HP 4 REFUSES TO CONNECT VIA USB

I am hoping one of you experts can help me.

I was struggling with connecting my MacBook Pro (10.5.8) directly to HP printers via a USB to Parallel printer cable. Thanks to CUPS (localhost:631) I was able to get 2 MacBook Pros, connected directly to an HP 4200. However, I have an HP 4 in perfect condition which I would also like to get working. It gets recognized just fine, but I allways get a "Printer Off Line Message". There must be somthing different about the old HP 4.

Can any of you give me some help?
