I asked the CromOS people over the phone in the openprinting summit last week how far are they from a working prototype demo (not necessarily with cups), and they said they already have a working prototype involving some printer/hardware models. So it is not a matter of 'wait', but some of it has already happened, and the 'wait' is more about for its release.
