[cups.general] Looking for a printer in CUPS

I have a USB printer (HP OfficeJet) connected to my desktop,
running CentOS-5.5, with cups-1.3.7-18.el5_5.7.x86_64 .
This works fine on the desktop.

Now I am trying to access the printer from my laptop,
running Fedora-13 with 1:cups-1.4.2-28.fc12.i686 .

I thought CUPS was meant to be able to find
a printer on the local LAN?
Have I misunderstood this point,
or am I mis-applying CUPS in some way?

Can I perhaps use hplip for this purpose?
If so, how?
