scaling pdf file for a poster

Thanks for the suggestion. However, I've tried both:

lp -d lexmark -o PageSize=Custom.420x594cm -o fitplot=true poster1-100.pdf
and
lp -d lexmark -o PageSize=Custom.420x594cm -o fit-to-page=true poster1-100.pdf

and also setting the PageSize to A2, but in neither case did the pdf scale up to print over 4 pages on my A4 printer.
I also tried the same commands with a png graphic, and that didn't scale up either.
I must be going wrong somewhere with the commands and would appreciate some guidance.
