Now i have tested Ubuntu 10.04, Kubuntu 10.04, OpenSuse 11.3 and Mandriva 2010-spring.
All of them have greyed out the Two_sided option in the printing wizard. But i have found that OpenOffice handles the class better in its own print wizard!

Btw, the printer configuration dialog ( system-config-printer.py ) handles real printers and classes different. You can see the same thing as on printing. The duplex options are greyed out ( and there is no URI for the class ).

Now i'm a little confused. The printing wizard seems broken in all three distributions - or something else is wrong.
How to find the broken layer or server setup?

Regards, Axel
