Delay after print job

Hello,

   I am experiencing a strange delay after a text document is printed; this cause subsequent jobs to have to wait around 40 seconds after the prior job just print. The only thing I can see is this in the CUPS error log:

D [25/Aug/2010:11:43:01 -0400] Create-Job ipp://localhost:631/printers/THARO_H_427
{ other messages }
D [25/Aug/2010:11:43:01 -0400] PID 540 (/usr/libexec/cups/filter/rastertotpl) exited with no errors.

The job prints in less than one second after I click the "Print" button. But, the next job will not print until around 40 seconds later, even if I print a second job 2 or 3 seconds later after the first, and I see this in the error log:

D [25/Aug/2010:11:43:06 -0400] cupsdSetBusyState: Printing jobs and dirty files
I [25/Aug/2010:11:43:32 -0400] Generating printcap /Library/Preferences/org.cups.printers.plist...
{ other messages }
D [25/Aug/2010:11:43:32 -0400] cupsdSetBusyState: Printing jobs
D [25/Aug/2010:11:43:47 -0400] [Job 111] Got USB transaction timeout during read

The first job prints immediately, but even when printing the same document within 5 seconds of printing the first one, it takes around 40 seconds for the second job to print. This occurs on our company's H-427 thermal-transfer printer connected via USB interface; a Zebra R110Xi does not exhibit this problem (also connected via USB).

The other thing is that this is not a problem under Tiger or Leopard; and it wasn't a problem either on Snow Leopard until a recent Apple system software update.

I see the "Got USB transaction timeout during read" message above - does CUPS now wait for a response from the printer after a job is completed? Any help/tips would be appreciated.

   Thanks,

      Bill
