The space filled with black is a bug in hpcups. I got a patch for it and
applied it to the Ubuntu package and this solved the problem.
Unfortunately, HP did not release a version of HPLIP with this fix yet.

In Ubuntu and Debian I have also solved the problem with the too small
RIPCache by applying a patch to CUPS so that CUPS defaults to a RIPCache
of 1/4 of the system's memory. In addition I modified the "cups" output
device in Ghostscript (available in the upcoming Ghostscript 9.00) so that
if no RIPCache or an invalid RIPCache (no number or <= 0) is given that
Ghostscript takes up the needed memory automatically.
