Ok.

By the looks of it, the colour/bw option in adobe reader isn't really a part of the reader, but of the OS, and I need to set the printer up to override application settings and use that option. anyone know how to do this? would it be done in CUPS or from windows terminals?

failing that, the other solution of printing to a seperate print queue. How would I set this up? I mentioned I've already tried re-adding the printer with different options, it didn't work.
