Pointing my browser to:

  http://localhost:631/help

displays a page with:

  "What's New in CUPS 1.4"

So I guess I've got version 1.4.

Thanks, that shows:

  lpstat -p
printer Officejet-Pro-L7500 is idle. enabled since Tue Dec 28
10:42:27 2010
printer Officejet-Pro-L7500-Fax is idle. enabled since Tue Dec 21
11:45:28 2010
printer PDF is idle. enabled since Fri Dec 10 19:03:34 2010

However, the man lpstat man page says:

  -p [printer(s)]
     Shows the printers

However, it doesn't say that what's shown is the actual printer
"destinations", i.e. what should be supplied to the `lpoptions -d`
command to set the default printer. Of course I might have guessed
that what lpstat was actually the destination; however, there were
several different terms for attributes of a printer(e.g. device uri)
in the man pages I read that I had no idea which attribute to use.

It turns out that what I finally did was go to the
  System>Administration>Printing
window where 3 printer icons appeared(with the same names
as shown by `lpstat -p`), then selected
  Officejet-Pro-L7500
and then selected 'Set As Default'

This is another case of OIK (Obvious If Known).

Thanks for the help.

  Larry
