cups 1.4.2 problem

I was successfully running CUPS 1.4.2 on FreeBSD 8.0-STABLE but had problems
with a Java-based application not seeing any CUPS printer(s).  During the bug
hunt, I reinstalled CUPS from the FreeBSD ports tree.  All this amounted to was
recompiling everything from the original build of the same source from January
followed by an overwriting replacement of the same "deliverables".

Following this reinstallation, printing does not work. I can queue up print jobs
and see them listed in the output of lpq(1).  CUPS has knowledge of my printer
and claims it is ready for printing.  I am able to cancel(1) any queued jobs,
but nothing makes it to the printer.

I can provide configuration files or log/error files is so requested, but I am
at my wits end to understand what has caused my printing using CUPS to cease.
