This is the default behavior unless the printer returns a hard error.  LPD, unfortunately, is a protocol with absolutely no error recovery mechanisms and can lead to this behavior.

If possible, use socket with this printer to avoid this kind of error - unlike LPD, socket does not time out on printer errors.
