How do you "stop" a cups queue? from command line

I'm used to lpd, so cups is quite new.

I've looked through the documentation, and have not found the equivilent
of "lpc queue stop", that is still allow queueing of jobs, but do not
attempt to print them.

And of course, it's equivilent, "lpc queue start"

I'm running under RHEL5

Since this is a remote site, the GUI is not an option.
