Changing font when printing textfiles from the CLI

I've used cups (without issue) for years under Fedora and Ubuntu, but having recently purchased a Mac I've run into issues printing text files with the lpr and lp commands, my output prints in a massive typeface that results in multiple pages of absurdly large text. Is there a way to change the default font size when printing from these commands? I'm running cups version 1.4.4 on osx 10.6.4 with an HP PSC 2170 all-in-one printer. Any help would be appreciated.
