Filter Printer List from cups-get-dests

For a situation where the print server has a few hundred print queues configured, it is desirable to enable users to specify a printer interest list.  (classic way is a ~/.printers file with a line like:
_all: printer1,printer2,printer3

I actually wrap the lpstat command with a script so lpstat -a will honor that line in ~/.printers.
Is there any way to do the same for clients such as firefox that call the API to get the printer list?
