I've decided it's best to put the above question aside for now, and
simply strip the issue down to the actual point of failure. To whit,
GhostScript is choking on the final PostScript file:

....even though it works quite well on the original file (before pstops
and foomatic take their turns at it):

In any case, I think I'd better resume this topic on cups.general, as
tracing GS execution problems seems to me to be more of a usage issue...
