printing from lion to a cups 1.4.3 server

I'm running a cups 1.4.3 server on a ubuntu lucid machine (I got their packages).  It's set up so that people have to authenticate before printing.  Someone stopped me in the hall last week and told me printing from lion didn't work.  I got a laptop with lion on it and I've been unable to spool a job.

Do I need a new cups server on the linux side (what other libraries should I update?) or is there some option to get the lion client to talk to the linux box?

(I did try and force it to authenticate by adding AuthInfoRequire username,password to printers.conf)
