I have a bad habit of confusing the cups XtoX filters with the X2X filters. At first I thought that that confusion might have been the problem. I seem to remember ps2ps substantially reducing the size of raw PS output from Gnome applications. And yet, in the testing that I have done since reading your post, I find that ps2ps acutally increases the size of my test case files by a substantial percentage. Maybe by 20%-40%.
