Nope, neither would the data light :-)
sorry, i usually live in network attached printer land.

try building it as a raw device and sending just a flat text file "this is a test" with the lp command (or use the -o raw option) and see if that prints out.  what I suspect is happening is the printer is getting the job in a language it doesn't understand so it's flushing the job, but since it did recieve the job, CUPS is none the wiser that it didn't print.
