Mike is correct.  CUPS uses a pdf to ps filter which makes use of an
external piece of code for the conversion.  Depending on the setup that
might be pdftops from xpdf, pdftops from poppler or ghostscript.

In all of those cases the bug is in the pdf to ps convertor which is not
part of CUPS, and hence is supported by whoever provides that.

If you build CUPS yourself you can choose which pdf to ps convertor is
used and make sure that is one which works properly.

Which Linux distribution are you using?  Is the CUPS you are using
provided by them?
